First, I've always been a huge Eastwood fan probably for the same reasons as everyone else. Love his older, AND his newer westerns. Unforgiven may be my favorite of all time. Love his directing skills. His sceneries have been great, and his movies just know how to keep you into the story.
Cry Macho was different. The actual story & dialog were not up to par...., but neither was Eastwood. As an actor or director. As many great films as he's made playing an older man.... and being able to fully embrace his age on screen.... this one really reminded me of an aging actor/director whose time has come.
I get that he is in his 90's, and don't take anything away from what he has accomplished. But this movie hit me a lot like the athlete who doesn't realize he is done. I felt the finished product was not up to Eastwood's standards... and he doesn't really know it. I could be wrong about him not knowing it, but don't think I'm wrong about his standards.
Anyways, this one just made me sad. Feels like I'm watching an Icon ride off into the sunset.... for the last time.... and he's having trouble staying on his horse.
Might this have been his last movie?
