In a way I kinda sorta do that when I'm programming drum tracks - because having never been a bass player, I don't necessarily always know what makes for good bass line in accordance with the drums.. Sometimes, but not always.. I can understand a producer's confusion and panic when trying to mix a kick that varies in volume.. that would be somewhat trippin'..

One f the other innovations of mine is that on my right hand (pick hand) I wear a fairly fat thumb ring, which I've started using on the strings sort of like a slide, like a slide guitarist would do.. but since it son my RIGHT hand, its awkward to get it over the frets, so I just do stuff in the picking area with it - sometimes while picking.. I'm sure if I look it up, every guitarist and his dog are doing that, as well, but I've actually never seen a guitarist do that..
