I believe, perhaps mistakenly or remembering poorly, that you are a big fan of Meryl, right?
I must confess that I've never been truly impressed with Meryl Streep while fully acknowledging that she is a very good actress. I never thought otherwise, always thought she was very good.... but I had not seen any performance that really swept me away... until now....
Have you seen the movie Doubt? Difficult watch, to say the least, but Meryl definitely won me over in this role, she was superb. Of course I must also make mention of Viola Davis who was equally superb. Again I may be mistaken but I think it possible Viola won Best Supporting Actress for this role, or at least was nominated?
I'm going to stop for a moment and go check about that Oscar because I have another point I'd like to make... one moment:
Ok, no, Viola did not win but she was nominated so the point I wanted to make:
To my knowledge this is the only time, or best example, for an Oscar nomination for such a small role? That's a pity, some of the best acting I have ever witnessed has come about in small, even extremely small, performances in film. No question Viola deserved the nomination... and I'm not sure who won Best Supporting Actress that year but it does surprise she was beaten. - JamesJM
Viola Davis did not win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Doubt. The 2009 Best Supporting Actress award went to Penelope Cruz for her role in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona".
