I coached football for many years. When I began my son was 2.... so for years I waited for the chance to coach him. Finally the year came when he could begin.
"I want to play ice hockey". My son.
"What are you talking about? We live in in Calif. I can't move to Canada so you can play Ice Hockey". - Me.
As it turned out Fresno, 40 miles away, had a Jr. Hockey team... still not sure how my son discovered that and I had no idea. Well... to make this short:
He played Ice Hockey, for something like a decade, never playing football at all. I followed him for every game... throughout Calif and several nearby states.
I coached football for about 15 years... but not my son. Only reason that came to mind was because of your post.... the rest of the time I never give it a second thought.. too busy living the glorious memories of those Ice Hockey days. Wouldn't trade them for anything- JamesJM
