As good as the series was, the novels by McMurtry that the tv series was based upon are equally great. Both Lonesome Dove and The West Wing show us what television can be in the face of critics who say that tv sucks. Nevertheless, I really recommend McMurtry's books on the west especially the Lonesome Dove series.
