that is, no ropes at all. It angers me. I'm not impressed.
Some years ago I watched the first free climb of Half Dome.... BUT, the climber WAS roped... the rule being he could not advance, (climb), with any aid whatsoever. Most of the trip up he conquered without a lot of trouble - but one section was next to impossible. He had to jump, both up and to the side, and hang himself on an extremely small node jutting from the sheer face. IT took him several attempts, each failure meaning falling and being saved by the rope. No rope ever made would give me that much confidence.
I considered mountain climbing once.... by rope and pitons, WITH a guide, but in the end I realized it was 'only' to say I conquered my fear... and I eventually realized such an accomplishment was not that important to me... lots of other things I had FAR more interest in... even IF as, or near as, dangerous.
