That's a tough one.. especially with cats..

Dogs - especially Beagles could use the eating thing as a good check because they will eat anytime anywhere unless they are super sick or hurt.. I dunno about cats who seem to be finicky year round.. Just try giving him something that would normally be a super treat - in Mexico we found a starving cat and tried to give him pizza and whatever we had left over, but he wouldn't eat it..So, we bought him a few fresh shrimp and some milk and he WENT TO TOWN on it.. I mean, through it down immediately.. So, if you have a treat he's not used to, that migh tbe a better way to gauge if he'll eat..
