I can see what they were doing. First off, overall I agree with you and was wondering wtf they were doing when May got pulled last night....BUT, ultimately Julio was in theory the starter, with a right handed opener. They wanted the Padres to run out a starting lineup against a righty, and then they switched after 1 inning
The key for it being successful, was Julio getting some effective length in the game, and that is exactly what he did. Luckily Julio has seemed to turn it around with his control He was very shaky for much of the season, but is now coming through in the clutch..
Ultimately, I think Gonsolin would've started game 4, and May would've started game 5 if needed.
