Generally, men are more likely to have kidney stones and women more likely to have gall stones. Yes, depending on the size kidney stones can be either not painful at all to pass or severely painful. My wife had a kidney stone 9mm while travelling and had to be hospitalized where it was surgically removed. I have never seen her in that much pain-before surgery- including the birth of our son.
