Back in the 80's my son played Ice Hockey. We were scheduled to play Santa Rosa, their ice. For this game my nephew was going to suit up as well although he had only just begun playing ice hockey and was no where near ready to get into a game. My other nephew was to be the 'water boy'. And get this:

Our coach couldn't make it so he asked if I could take over for this game... I know next to NOTHING about Ice Hockey, as far as coaching that is.

So the game starts... and eventually a fight breaks out... my son and a Santa Rosa player. Soon, within seconds, it's mayhem on the ice. The officials are struggling to break it up.. so I try to help, by stepping onto the ice... I had no idea that was a 'no no' in Ice Hockey. The official stops breaking up a fight to get me off the ice, (note: I am NOT fighting, these are kids), I'm trying to stop the fight). Off the ice I notice a fight behind the penalty box... it's our water boy, (my nephew), and the Santa Rosa water boy.. so I break THAT up.

I was tossed out of the ice rink... as was my son, my two nephews, a couple of our players, and no few Santa Rosa players.

So the game ends... we go home, and a week later I get a call that I have to meet the league reps at a meeting, (you know this ain't going to be good, right? ) - -

Ok, no reason to be overly dramatic. I was suspended. My son was suspended. Both my nephews were suspended. All this for one game. We had a couple of other players suspended as well as did Santa Rosa.

The moral of this story: Never try to break up a fight in Ice Hockey.
