I don't think he was underrated as a guitarist at all. Apparently he was darned good and people knew it which is why he had a successful career as a busy session musician playing for so many famous singers. He was in high demand. But then when he began singing, that talent is the one that gained him stardom with the public. He still played a mean guitar but it was for his own performances rather than for other folks.
