Although I haven't been in the weeds as I was when I was involved in auto racing.
Throughout the years I spent covering racing for UPI and eventually for Ford's racing program I got to know many of the drivers on a personal basis. Almost all of them good guys even among the very best like Mark Donohue, Peter Revson, Denis Hulme and the like. Especially the NASCAR participants. . . just good ol' boys with their crazy wry humor.
Then I worked my first F-1 race at the Detroit Grand Prix. And you are so correct. The drivers lived in a bubble laced with do not enter signs.. Even for the press.
The worst of the bunch were filthy rich kids who earned their money the hard way. . . they got it from their family. LOL I can't deny their talent, though.
By the way, have you watched the F-1 E- races? I've found them fascinating and fun to watch. Even though you know there's some nerd with a plastic pen holder in their shirts guiding the cars.
