Sorry, this got me thinking.
It was Christmas eve. . . and I was hanging out in the barracks in Ludwigsburg, Germany where I was stationed.
I had befriended a couple of local families who "adopted me"
And then I got the call.
It was from Detlef, one of my German friends. Now, understand, in Germany, Christmas Eve is very private affair for primary family only. Detlef asked me if I would like to join his family for Christmas Eve dinner. I couldn't say no. . I felt honored. And the only thing they asked was that I wear my uniform. Again, I couldn't say no,
Dinner was wonderful. . . goose and knoodles
think of a baseball size ghnocchi). After dinner, they had a present for me. . . a framed painting of the palace in Ludwigsburg. And what was really interesting, every phone call Mrs. Werlitz got she announced in German. . . "We have an American soldier with us." It was like she was proud to have me there.
