I'm not sure that should be priority #1. There is an infinite amount of knowledge to be gained other just finding life elsewhere.... but I do admit that would be the 'biggie'.

I'm actually amazed that SETI has not discovered life somewhere else in the universe. I understand the scope of the search, needle in a haystack.... but it still surprises me.
