I read the book Shattered Sword. It disclosed that it was mainly the ship's Commander that was so gung ho to get revenge on those guys. It was on the second attempt that the deed was done....at night. He was going to have it done, in the daylight (Like the movie) but he noticed there were too many other observers on board. That Commander was killed in 1943 when his ship was sunk.
