dementia is cruel...

September 17, 2019 05:50AM
my dad had Parkinsons... he passed in spring of 2008.....

in December of 2007, he took a spill and landed on his head, then the dementia came hard and fast.....

I remember sitting in the hospital with him in that December of 2007 after his fall...... we were watching the Patriots play the Giants on TV in the final regular season game of the 2007 on SNF....... although my dad had a soft spot for Boston teams, (Boston was the 1st US city he immigrated to) we were both rooting for the Giants to spoil the Patriots' undefeated season that night....

By the time the Giants played the Patriots in the Super Bowl 4 weeks later, my dad , an avid football fan, didn't know what the NFL was, let alone the Super Bowl...... Giants spoiled the Pat's season.....

I remember sitting on my parents couch playing my dad's acoustic guitar while we sat with him.... my dad turned to my mom and said " who is this guy playing the guitar?"

he forgot who we were, with the exception of my mom... he always remembered mom... but unfortunately, he forget about most other people... the strange thing was, sometimes out of the blue he would remember my kids by name when they would initially see him... he was always exciting to see his grandkids.....
