I saw a meteor HIT the ground... (confirmed).
Having spent many night in the high Sierra's, and on my ranch, I've seen many great falling stars.... fireballs - green, blue, red, orange, you name it. The one that I saw hit the ground, by the way, was a brilliant 'blue'.
In the late 60's I saw a Russian satellite burn up above Calif. I thought it had hit the ground in the Coast Range Mountains about 30 miles south of me but actually it hit far out in the Pacific Ocean.
My all time record for 'simultaneous' falling star sightings is 3. That was on a backpacking trip in Yosemite Natl. Park.
I have NEVER seen one of those meteor showers that you read about where it's nearly constant. And I ALWAYS go out during 'known' meteor showers.
Not a meteor, but my biggest disappointment ever was the last passing of Haley's Comet.... which WAS visible to the naked eye, but barely. I did put my telescope on it and that made it 'good', not spectacular.
