You would do fine in the caves as long as you just stuck to the cenote entrances, where you have openings to the surface every now and then.. truly spectacular.. it actually doesn't bother me to get deeper in the cave system, as long as you stick to the rope, which is tied to through the cave to mark the way.. Our guide told us two of our favorite caves were shut down (one still is) for 6 months because divers died in both of them over the last year.. but, you hafta be EXTREMELY stupid to die in a cave dive in Mexico.. deviate from the string path, go down another entrance that even has a sign stating "prevent your own death - don't go this way"..

People hafta be a special kind of stupid to ignore signs like that.. yet, they do, and they pay the price...
