I think just about anyone who had an experience like that would have also become a metal-head for life.
I'm a lot older than you so my experience is obviously different. I had very little experience with music until I actually joined band in the 4th grade. We had a record player at home but it was seldom used... and being so far in the boonies radio wasn't really an option.
The first "epiphany" where I knew music would always be an element in my life was seeing a philharmonic orchestra in Fresno, when I was in the 4th grade (school trip).... so being in an orchestra became my passion. Classical music. And it stayed that was for quite a while until... pop/rock took hold of me some years later. The Beach Boys changed my desire from classical to pop/rock and then the Beatles solidified it. I never "lost" my love for classical, however.
Late 30's, early 40's, Jazz took over. But thru the years I at least fantasized about being a part of EVERY genre of music.
Today I think if I had it to do over again I would have stuck with my first desire. Classical. Playing in an orchestra. NOT to the exclusion of other genre at all... love them all.. I only mean as the main way I would have personally led a life of music. Of course had I done that I would definitely have finished up a concert at Carnegie Hall, came home, and turned on some Zeppelin.
