Get a fire proof safe for your valuables and scan those family photos onto digital and stick the thumb drive in the safe or store a copy offsite. I remember as a machinist I went to work for a company once and while they backed up all the programs (representing thousands of man hours) I was gobsmacked to find out they stored them onsite.
I have a flash drive that contains important files and documents (banking info, credit cards, utilities, software licenses, accounts including usernames & passwords, portfolio & accounting information, filed income tax forms, family photos & videos, family recipes and more). I keep it in my firebox but take it out frequently in an effort to keep it updated as much as possible. About 15 years ago I had a hard drive go belly up on me and I was so distraught because I didn't have anything backed up. I had the drive sent out to a recovery company which cost me $500 but they didn't recover hardly anything. The info was just gone. I swore that would never happen to me again. So, the flash drive with all this stuff on it is kind of a backup for me, too.
