Get a fire proof safe for your valuables and scan those family photos onto digital and stick the thumb drive in the safe or store a copy offsite. I remember as a machinist I went to work for a company once and while they backed up all the programs (representing thousands of man hours) I was gobsmacked to find out they stored them onsite.
