It was my last Summer there... 1989. The weather started getting freaky outside. We stood outside of the Fire Station on the airfield / Crash side. Till that day, I had never seen a tornado. When all of the sudden, my Bud from Central Illinois (A Tornado Veteran) tells me to keep a close eye on a cloud that had a green tint to it and a funky swirl. SUUUURE NUFF! About 1 minute later, the Base siren goes off and almost at the same time, drops from the cloud, what looked like a flapping shoe lace. By now, it was a few miles off base but it was flat and open so we could see waaaaaaay out. We're are all 18-24 years old and cheering on the tornado. It was then, the Weather O.I.C. comes running out of Base Ops by the tower and he was CHEWING US OUT!! LOL........."YOU GD MORONS!!!! STOP CHEERING ON THE TORNADO AND GET YOUR A$$ES INSIDE.......RIGHT F****** NOW!!!!!!
4-5 days later, in the Base Newspaper, they printed a Safety Story about Tornado Events. The story headline was....."The Tornado Siren Is A Call To Seel Shelter. NOT To Go Outside".
