I'm sure there are many who don't care for rail... mostly, I think, due to the time it takes. But I love the trains in Europe. Comfortably kicked back, (lots of room), and watching the countryside roll by.
I have never used the trains much here in the USA... mostly because for the most part it's been gone since I was born. My home town, 800 people, once had a train depot, and passenger service. My Dad and Mom, Grandfather an Grandmother used it. You could catch a train here, in the middle of nowhere, and ride to New York.... that blows my mind. My grandkids don't believe it.
Not sure when passenger trains ended here in my home town but it was still running during WWII.... My Dad, all those from here who served, caught the train here to travel to the Army and Navy bases to begin their enlistment. The railroad is actually still in use - commercial enterprises. In fact, it's one of the very few local tracks still in use in California. I hear the train whistle every morning, except Sunday, anywhere from 7am to 8:30am. It's about 1.5 miles from my home. - JamesJM
