Looking at this video, I could see that even the bow beams that held the deck up are gone. I had always wondered if the island was there because it is attached to the main hull. I have a model of the Akagi and you can see the same area of the hull that pokes out where the decking runs up into the island. Even so, I thought maybe the island might have fallen into the hull / hangar decks when she hit bottom. Looking at the sonar images from 2019....Though distorted views, you can see that both Akagi and Kaga are nothing but hulls with no deck at all. Both carriers burned VIOLENTLY for hours before they were scuttled. Kaga had some MAJOR explosions before and even after she sank. I read Ens George Gay's book, "Sole Survivor" and he said as he floated in the distance from the sinking Kaga, he felt a tremendous explosion just after she sank. On Kaga's sonar photo, it looks like even the side of the hull fell on it's side on the ocean bottom.
