most evidence points toward them making it - including the letter you mentioned.. But, I think making the swim would have been next to impossible.. supposedly the water is ridiculously cold there, along with some torrential currents.. Having dove in freezing water with a 7mm wetsuit on I dunno if I would made it with the wetsuit and flippers.. Plus that area is fairly well known for Great Whites.. but, I WANTED them to make it, so I think, deep down, they did..
Plus I just saw a thing where, at Alcatraz, they only provided hot showers so prisoners couldn't get acclimated to cold water, helping to prevent escape.. I just read that - not 100% sure of its accuracy, but makes sense..
So, I dunno.. Totally killer story. hopefully they made it, but wouldn't be shocked if they didn't.. but, I guess no real way to prove either one..
