The escape from Alcatraz. Did they drown? Did they make it?
I'm guessing most of you know about this; probably seen the Eastwood movie. On June 11, 1962 John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Morris made what I think is the most elaborate and daring escape attempt in prison history. It's really an amazing story... the planning, the preparation, the execution.... but did they make it?
I go back and forth on this one... so I'm malleable.
I lean, (not by much), toward the official version... they drowned in the attempt. NOT, however, because they said the swim was hard.... I never thought that a good reason. It's not 'easy', exactly', but FAR from impossible. But at night, trying to keep out of sight AND make land at a little populated area would have made the attempt a LOT more difficult than it is for the Tri-Athletes who make the swim today.
How about the letter? Heard of it? In 2013 a letter was received supposedly written by one of the escapees - John Anglin. In the letter he says they all made it.... went on to say he'd turn himself in under certain conditions. My opinion: I very much doubt the letter is authentic. I doubt it because it's just so logical that it 'could' have been written by an attention seeker. So I don't think it's impossible that it's authentic I just think it's VERY unlikely.
Hmmm, can I put a % on my belief that they failed? Well... I'll start with the premise that they ALL made it.... I'd say 65% no and 35% yes. That at least one made it I'd say 49% yes and 51% no. So that means I'm pretty close to believing that one of the escapees saw the Indiana Jones movies.
