Stafford's cap hit next year is $20M.
If the Rams trade him his cap hit balloons to $74M.
1. Rams put him on the market at the beginning of the offseason.
2. Stafford picks the team of the interested suitors that he wants to play for.
3. That team takes on the cap hit and the value of the trade compensation is adjusted accordingly.
4. Rams may end up with minimal return once all is said and done to ensure they do right by the player.
This is of course not likely as there would need to be suitors and his interest in continuing to play with another team vice retiring. But it is interesting to consider and kick around.
