Everything starts there. Rams have moved him around in the scheme quite a bit. He has been used in the slot and they call it star and telling him he's special, but really that was just them capitalizing on his run defense and using him to boost the box. But also it was because his speed is not what it once was. Ramsey of even 3 years ago was an eraser. Now he's a guy who has to clutch and hold to stick with the better wideouts one on one.
Overall he's a good corner still I think, but the problem is he's being paid as an eraser still. He is now the guy you'd rather put on the opponent's WR2 than their top threat.
So do you restructure him? That seems a good way to go, though maybe he won't want to accept that who knows. If not then I think they should trade him. In fact I would probably put him on the block regardless and try to move him now for one reason: once speed starts to decline it's a good call to move a corner who is on a big check. He's 28 and there have been enough issues with our secondary that teams will probably still pony up some value for him. But I figure after 2023 that will no longer be the case.
If they move him then corner becomes a big priority. If not it is still a priority just not one of the highest for the roster.
Also safety is a big need for us. What we lack back there is someone who can anticipate and make plays on the ball. We have to be able to punish teams like SF for throwing over the middle, vice sitting back and reacting only to tackle who is in front of them. Much of that is players. A guy out there with anticipation will be moving when the QB makes the decision and arrive in time to maybe do something good. I figure we need one safety at a minimum who can play over the top in that way.
So a safety and corner, ball skills prioritized with both. And corner is a top need if Ramsey is moved. For myself.
