remember back in the 60's through the 90's there were only so many channels to chose from and no smart phones and internet.
Kids were much more likely to watch TV back in those day...I became a fan of the NFL in the 80's with Brent Mustberger and the NFL on CBS was my holy grail....unfortunately the Niners dominated that decade...
Steelers, Niners, Cowboys probably have the largest fan bases and it's easy to see why...they were the dynasties of those decades
