For one, I think it's hard to gauge Higbee's 2022 season- just like other receivers- given the OL and QB situations. He has been what he has been for 7 years now. A good, not great, pretty well-rounded TE. He had that amazing 5-game stretch in 2019 where everyone thought "here he goes!" but that was it. But I have really liked him overall as a solid, dependable piece. His peak has been 2019-2021 when he averaged 58 catches/year.
But... he turns 30 in 3+ weeks and is only under contract through 2023. So (even if they extend him by 1-2 years) grabbing a TE in the Draft would make sense. Just a matter of when. Given everything spelled out here and opinions also posted that this is a very good TE class if a top TE was there even as high as the 2nd or 3rd rounds could it make sense? For sure. I think at minimum they should look for one in the 4th round.
And blocking ability is a must. As others have said who could have known the gaping hole losing a TE3 like Mundt would have caused. And if 2023 is in part about getting the running game back to a high level than having a TE2 that can block well is an absolute must.
