It is easy to justify the release of both players. As you point out, the lack of durability must have been a key factor. It would also be easy to justify releasing various other players who weren't released. So there does seem to be some mystery to the move. If this is just a decision to move on (as opposed to something bad that happened behind the scenes), then it is one of the most encouraging moves the Rams have made all season. It is essential to make such moves without delay when it becomes clear that a player isn't going to be part of the plan going forward.
It is entirely possible that these are just the earliest moves in a string of contemplated future moves. Stay tuned.
