Naw-there was a reason Vermeil picked him as the 6th player in the draft. Not sure you read the article which had all his stats at Nebraska. Just overwhelming.
But alas-he was a mess ! Had he carried those assets from Nebraska into the NFL and stayed clean he would have been something. IMO that is.
Did you ever read the letters he wrote to Dick Vermeil while he was in prison? Really quite something. The coach was close to him as any father could have been. And Phillips knew it-as shown in those letter.
Vermeil didn't draft Lawrence Phillips. Lawrence Phillips was drafted in 1996 when Rich Brooks was the Rams head coach. Vermeil became the head coach in 1997.
