Naw-there was a reason Vermeil picked him as the 6th player in the draft. Not sure you read the article which had all his stats at Nebraska. Just overwhelming.
But alas-he was a mess ! Had he carried those assets from Nebraska into the NFL and stayed clean he would have been something. IMO that is.
Did you ever read the letters he wrote to Dick Vermeil while he was in prison? Really quite something. The coach was close to him as any father could have been. And Phillips knew it-as shown in those letter.
I get it, he looked great in college. I was excited about the pick. Didn't do much in the pros. And he had plenty of chances.
Irony was he basically was a blown pick, and the Rams won the Super Bowl without him. Of course, they may not have if he had kept his nose clean and stayed with the team. Then the Rams might have never acquired Marshall Faulk.
Funny how things worked out. The Rams lost their RB of the future and their QB of the future (Green) and went on to win it all with one of the most exciting teams of all time.
