.. we need Van back as that type of WR that Stafford love to throw to who can take the top off a defense; AND, in addition to Kupp, we need that second player who can make electrifying plays for big yards, and we don't have that now.
I think McVay and Snead realized that latter point as well, and that's what they saw in Kyren Williams. He has excellent field vision, uses his blocks well, improvises and can hit sudden-opening cutback lanes and runs to daylight. That's in addition to being the Swiss Army knife, do-it-all back for McVay's system who can catch out of the backfield and with Kyren, is especially good at pass protect.
We could have that player on the roster - when he's fully healed, fully reconditioned (a different thing from healing,) and albeit way behind in practice reps, ready to play football.
I can see four running backs - for as long as he's healthy McCutcheon, what's left of Brown, Williams and Rivers suiting up for the rest of the season as needed. Both Williams and Rivers can sneak through the smallest of creases at the line of scrimmage where McCutcheon seems to get stuck.
WE still don't know what Snead can pull off. There's always that.
And who knows? How hard will the injury bug bite other teams between now and the playoffs? As Whit says, it's tough to make up this early deficet - but we'll have to watch the games to find out.
