I read that, and my thoughts instantly turned to brain trauma and CTE.
MIne too, Classical.
I think we had less brain trauma, or heard less about it, when players wore leather helmets - the plastic helmet, when first introduced, cut down on injuries but eventually became a weapon, particularly when worn by dirty psycopaths like Rodney Harrison.
I wouldn't mind seeing those big goofy-looking helmets with padding on the outside that we saw pre-season, or something like them, become the norm for game day, if they'd significantly cut down on injuries. I've often thought the padding should be on the outside of the helmet to blunt the sharp impact of initial impact.
Or maybe we should bring back the leather helmets, equipped with minimal face guards.
