Here's my thought:
VJ was drafted when both Kupp & Woods were potential free agents. They were likely to lose one of them so they added a guy who mirrored their skills: Decent speed, decent hands, good route runner. Both Kupp and Woods eventually re-signed making VJ somewhat redundant. This off-season they felt that VJ was ready to start, and they sure weren't trading Kupp. So they added the big target in Robinson as their #2 (The same skill set they double drafted the year before in Harris & Skow) and they were set to have VJ as the rotational #2/#3. There was no place for Woods, though Woods is a better player than VJ and we took a $12 mil. dead money hit as a result of trading him.
Then VJ got re-injured leaving them with a messed up rotation of big targets and tiny, inexperienced speedsters but no one who can do the route running so important to McVay's passing philosophy.
Long speculation short: We thought VJ was ready to take Woods roster spot so we went with the younger/cheaper option.
