Fans love the players who can flash a big play. Media too. Lewis certainly has flashed, he's a bit of a freak who is capable of doing crazy things. But snap in and snap out consistency is how you win a role in the NFL. Teams don't give out popularity awards.
Lewis was a longshot from the beginning. Still might produce, but I've pretty much had him written off from day one.
It's almost a trope tbh. The super high ceiling types come in with all that fan hope, maybe even flash a bit, we get excited and then the year to year churn eventually gets them. It's not just Lewis in that role for us right now, but also Harris. And I let myself get caught up in it too, because it's fun to hope we hit on that freak player.
I think the key is not having too many of those types on the roster. Or at least balancing them with the lower talent types who produce. Les has been careful with it, though I think he went with a bit too much upside prioritization in the 2021 draft. Atwell, Rochell, Brown, Harris... Just feels like it was too much of that upside for that class which makes me think many of them will inevitably disappoint because of it. This year's draft was a complete reversal of that one.
