A time warp indeed. Damn, I loved that team.
I didn't remember that game. Probably wasn't available to the Minny market. A 40 year old game ... but I felt all the nerves of an undetermined outcome.
And what a different game they played back then. Authentic FOOTBALL with committed running games. Tactics that I actually understand. Traps and tosses and draws and counters and slants. The game we all played back then. FBs lead blocking and getting carries! Hell, I saw full house formations!
Today's game is a fundamentally different enterprise. Half of what I see bewilders me. The running games today operate with blocking principles that I can't begin to grasp. Not a helluva lot of driving a man off the LOS. Instead, screening people and shaping the pursuit to leave a lane by default. It's just a different game.
Hell, I'm an old fart. The game I played is long gone. The new game is a wonder to behold. But I do miss the days when OLs would try to drive DLs off the LOS and powerful, athletic RBs would try to get over what ruggers call the gain line. After all, that is actually what the game is supposed to be about.
And where the hell are the snows of yesteryear?
