I am an avid fan but not particularly knowledgable of Xs and Os.
This last season, our season started sliding away on offense, and then suddenly we seemed to right the ship by leaning on Sony Michel and running the ball a lot more. In fact, in the games that we committed to running the ball, even when the run wasn't really working, it seemed like we won the games.
Obviously the SB was the best example of this. The run game was really stuck in the mud, and yet McVay stayed with it and stayed with it. And in the end we won.
Can anyone explain this? How does committing to running the ball even when its not very productive seem to make such a difference in winning and losing for this team? In past years, it had to do with the play action game, but we didn't even use that that much this year.
