The padded practice helmets are for injury prevention. It seemed like the Rams started using them when Stafford hit his thumb on an offensive lineman's helmet in last year's camp. It's like the old Don Beebe helmet. If the padded practice helmets help reduce injuries or concussions/CTE it seems wise to use them.
