Vermeil had one of them: 13-3 in 1999 and a SB win.
Martz had the other three:
2000 10-6, lost in the Wild Card round
2001 14-2, lost in the SB
2003 12-4, lost in the Division round
The Rams also made the playoffs under Martz in 2004 with an 8-8 record, again losing in the Division round.
The Death of Mike Martz was his complete loyalty to Larry Marmie and I understand Marmie gave him his first shot to be OC at Arizona State, but Martz would not let that go. He tried to get Marmie in 2001 before going with Lovie Smith thank God because the Cardinals denied permission. Then when Smith left to become Head Coach of the Bears in 2004, he again hired Marmie before interviewing any other candidates beginning the rift between him and Jay Zygmunt who had asked Dick Jauron to come in for an interview and then Martz told Jauron, he promised the gig to Marmie.
Martz even had Larry Marmie who was like 100 years old as his defensive coach for the San Diego Fleet in the now defunct AAF league, give me a break. I do believe that if the Rams had paired Martz with a viable GM, it might have been better, but his loyalty to an inept coach was his demise and thank the heavens that McVay understands that and if they don't produce like John Bonamego, they are gone.
