I don't see how this helps

Just potentially prolongs a game.
For instance, in the Buffalo/KC game, KC would still get the ball to start OT.
KC scores the TD, Buffalo gets to score their TD (probably).
So KC gets the ball again and scores....and wins.

How did that really help anything?
Defense is still part of the game. The Bengals proved that against KC.
