There's a big difference between salary and cap hit. The OP shows Boom with an $8M cap hit, but that doesn't mean his salary or even his average salary is $8M.

In reality, the Rams could easily sign Boom to a contract that averages more than $8M a year but have a 2022 cap hit that is much lower than $8M. Here's one way to do a 4 year, $48M contract with a $10M signing bonus - it averages $12M a year, but the cap hit in 2022 is only $3M.

2022 $1M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $3M cap hit.
2023 $10M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $12M cap hit.
2024 $12M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $14M cap hit.
2025 $15M salary and $2M pro rated signing bonus = $17M cap hit.
2026 ZERO salary, but still a $2M pro rated signing bonus = $2M cap hit. <== void year for cap purposes only
