My take after just rewatching the play: playing the ball the way he did (jumping and turning) was both the fastest way to flip his hips so he was in the best position to catch the ball and also the most effective way to use his body to shield the defender from the ball.

Just a great heads-up move by Kupp that IMO says nothing about the quality of the throw. In fact, it was a thing of beauty from my point of view.
