Going to a couple of Superbowls doesn't equal to HOF. Being a curiosity or even a "child" prodigy doesn't do it either.
Longevity is a huge factor because it takes long periods of results with several different player mixes to accumulate enough credentials.
No way a coach can, in 5 years of coaching, be talked about as a future HOF guy. Especially a guy that is 36 years old. That's just media hype.
John Madden was a 10 year guy, and it was a combo of his success and what he came to mean in the broadcast booth that got him the gold jacket.
We can talk 10 years from now about McVay and the HOF. But even if he coached 5 more years with good success and then walked away, the walking away at such a young age would probably count against him. This isn't the John Madden era of a half-century ago.
