Re: In defense of Stafford

February 14, 2022 05:06AM
One thing became abundantly clear ... with the losses of Woods, Higbee, and then Blanton and OBJ, we were left with few receiver options. The only options we had were Hopkins and Kupp. Jefferson and Skowronek were not up to the challenge on that stage. But that is the risk in rosters today. Depth.

After seeing Kupp mugged and doubled all day, and going thru his progressions, Stafford just decided if he was going down he was going down throwing it to Kupp. Plus it was a smart reaction at the end. Kupp went in the slot and was brutally mugged by Hubbard off the edge. He still shook it off and they hooked up for the TD (to be called back). Get him out of the slot, and keep him as clean as you can. I still cannot believe they left him singled with Apple though. What an absolute gift.

It's easy to say that the team would have done XYZ with a healthy Woods/Higby/OBJ. But they didn't, and pulled out a brutal win thanks to the D.

I don’t think enough has been made of Stafford having to operate virtually without a running game…
