Every week in the NFL teams lose trying to run the clock. Yes, sometimes they hang on by the skin of their teeth, but I see games every week in the NFL where teams are content with the lead to run it and punt it to burn clock even though there is still plenty of time for the other team to score and they end up losing.
But teams just keep doing it and keep blowing leads by not trying to get a first down to end the game.
Have to know the team and how they are performing in the game.
Sans the fumbles, Tampa Bay could not defend the pass. Stafford was playing great.
In that case, win it by getting first downs and relying on Stafford's arm. The guy you mortgaged the future on.
Instead, this is like playing prevent defense. Call it Prevent Offense if you will.
If Rams were running the ball well and Stafford was sucking, then by all means, run the ball 3 times.
People here are thinking this is black and white.. always do this, always do that. It isn't. It is knowing what's been working and what your players can do in the moment of the game. Throttling an offense down when the QB was reading the defense like a children's novel is just scared playcalling.
