Gotta remember all of the "Don'ts"
DONT touch any part of his helmet. That includes the face mask, the top, the sides or the back. Including even the chin strap.
DONT hit him low.
DONT hit him late.
If you can manage that, then have at it.
Oh, and like Mama says, if you see him whining to the refs, just chill for a bit until his tears and sniffles dry up. Then resume.
