Stafford is always wanting to drive the ball downfield. He'll hold the ball a little longer and take a few risks to do that. Squeeze it into tight spots.
The other end of the scale is a Sam Bradford or a Alex Smith that thinks check down, screen, dump off in nearly every pass play unless some guy is wide, wide open further downfield. They don't want to hold on to the ball any longer than they have to. Their passing game is more like a series of long hand offs.
Which do you prefer? This is all about how a QB and his HC are wired.
Teams can win either way. It just depends on the system and the players on both sides of the ball.
McVay is NOT a check down guy. Never will be. Snead swings for the fences. This is why they love Stafford. They all think the same way. Naturally McVay doesn't love the turnovers at inopportune times. But honestly, some of that is on McVay. If McVay wants to protect Stafford at critical moments, it's all about the play call. If you are backed up, have a lead, the crowd is loud and your D is playing lights out, then for Pete's sake don't call for some pass play that takes time to develop. Stafford will take the bait and try to make a play. It's his nature and it is not going to change nor does McVay want it to change.
