I thought forward progress had to be stopped as a result of a defensive player stopping the offensive player's progress. If a player runs out of bounds going backward, of his own accord, and his forward progress was not stopped by a defensive player, not sure why that should stop the clock. But kudos to Beckham for knowing that rule.
